Arlington Field Hockey (AFH) is dedicated to introducing the sport of field hockey to young players and allowing them to find a love of the game.  We offer a fall recreational season, starting at the end of August through the beginning of November.

Grades: 3rd - 8th

Practice times and places are TBD each year.  For the past 3 years we have practiced Monday evenings at Longbridge Park, and played games Sunday mornings at Bishop O'Connell.

See you on the field.

2024 marks the 5th Anniversary of Arlington Field Hockey!

Arlington Field Hockey is the largest recreational field hockey league in the DC area. We are a non-tryout league, but warning! we fill up fast.  We provide teams and games for grades 3rd-8th, modifying the games to serve the development of the players.

AFH HISTORY

IMG_4676.jpeg

IN 2019, ARLINGTON YOUTH LACROSSE PARTNERED WITH ARLINGTON FIELD HOCKEY, AND BROUGHT FIELD HOCKEY TO ARLINGTON

We had immediate success, filling up all teams in the first month.  Since our inaugural year, we have continued to fill up teams as soon as registration opens.

AFH is also focused on supporting field hockey at our high school level.  We reach out to our high schools to provide coaching, support, and inspiration.  High School field hockey players coach teams, set up and break down fields for games, and umpire.  In turn, we provide resources, equipment, and any support we can for our Arlington High Schools.

In 2021 and 2022, Arlington High School Yorktown were VHSL Field Hockey State Champs, Wakefield HS had it's most successful year in school history in 2022. Bishop O'Connell had more wins in 2019 than in the school's combined history, and continues to exceed their performance every year.  Is it the effect of AFH? Is it the growth of game, in general, in our area? Is it a fluke? I think you can guess what we think here at Arlington Field Hockey.

Field Hockey is growing in our area (W-L and Yorktown both have Varsity, JV and Freshman teams).  Field Hockey is expanding in talent in our area as more and more kids go on to play in college.

FAQ

When do I register my child?
Registration for Fall will open in late spring. Our spots fill up fast, but if the website says "waitlist only" you should still register.  Knowing how many are on the waitlist, tells us how many more teams we need to create, and how many more coaches we need to find.

At any time, you may reach out to our field hockey commissioner, Megan Sullivan at arlingtonfieldhockey@gmail.com

When are practices + games?
Pre-season practices begin late August. Times and places TBD. (In the past we have practiced on Monday nights at Longbridge, and we request that time and place each year)

Games will start in early September.

There are no games on Labor Day or Columbus Day weekend.

Games will be held in Arlington, Sunday mornings at Bishop O'Connell HS. The game schedule will be determined after we have finalized teams.

What if my child has never played Field Hockey before?

Many haven’t, so no worries. That's exactly why Arlington Field Hockey was created.

Field hockey is a sport that many don’t learn until they start High School.  All three Arlington High Schools have a Varsity and JV field hockey team. Even learning this sport for the first time in 8th grade will give you an edge over many of the high schoolers coming out to play.  Plus, it’s really fun! We know that many are new to this sport, and that’s the purpose of Arlington Field Hockey - to introduce field hockey and help it grow.

What does my child need to play field hockey?
Not much, just a field hockey stick, mouthguard and shinguards. This Blog gives a great breakdown of what you need to play field hockey

I used to play field hockey and would like to help coach?

Wow, do we want to hear from you!  If you would like to help coach, please email Megan Sullivan at arlingtonfieldhockey@gmail.com

Even if you did not play, we have practice plans and assistants who have played and can help parents and adults who would like to coach.

Rules

Our teams will be playing on modified fields and with modified rules.  We follow USA field Hockey rules with certified USA field hockey referees umpiring our games, but when using modified fields the rules must be adjusted.  You can see a review of our modified rules here.
